To all lurking and posting Bronzers, VIPs included

You have most likely heard about the different projects that several members of the The Bronze Posting Board at www.buffy.com have commenced. These projects have examined various aspects of the community that has developed therein over the last few years, such as the folklore of the community, status and prestige, and the ideological position of the series in its cultural context. The project that SarahNicole and willa are working on is different on several points.

First, ours is a systematic study in the sociological tradition of ethnography. Second, it has grown organically out of both our own experiences as part of the Posting Board membership and our professional interests. Finally, the project links the first two points in the sense that it connects our findings to a larger world of social theory and observation about human behavior, focusing especially on the Internet as a new source of community development and as a new tool and site for research.

As you may have noticed during one of your forays into The Bronze, in the summer and fall of 1998, we began posting information about the project and the link to an online survey for members to fill out. We have a shiny new survey that asks some more specific questions about more recent developments in The Bronze. It is located at:
New Survey
(Please note, the "consent form" link is not working right now, but you can find it here directly: Consent Form or link to it from the original site.

If you never participated in the original survey, and are interested in doing so, you may find it here: original survey , or go to: http://sociweb.tamu.edu/Faculty/GATSON/Gatson.htm to link to the information from there. Any problems with the forms, email gatson@unix.tamu.edu

Thanks to Raithen for the linking!

Raithen As long as I don't start quoting Milgram and Zimbardo, though, right? ;-)

Everdawn That's good to hear! Just be sure to take care of yourself! :-) FbN and I are largely okay. Her dad had a mild coronary early this week, but he should be home tomorrow and recover fully.

I take it all this discussion is about Jono? I simply report him everytime I see him acting up. Talking to him is useless. Sooner or later the PTB will act. Until then he's simply another annoying fact of life. Like road construction.

Ever, the last sentence of your second paragraph is very telling, I wonder if you heard yourself. Because that's what this whole damn night has been about. "He" has controlled the night, the conversations, etc. Whether "he" is here posing as someone else (as I suspect) or not, "he" is IN CONTROL of this conversation.

Can we stop now? Can we stop GIVING him this control over us? There is a reason we don't FEED Bezoars. They come here to feed. So stop. It's really that simple. Stop.

Why is it that nobody gets this simple, basic rule? It constantly astonishes me.

And now I'm taking my atonished thoin away from this nonsense and heading for the Lurkage...

Slayerdaddy, I'll be up a little while longer if you wanna e me, or else send me e at work tomorrow. My curiosity runneth over. And patience is NOT my long suit.

Geo: How many chances would you say a person should have? How many times should a poster be allowed to be abusive before s/he is shunned by the community at large? How many apologies (either sincere or insincere) do we as a community have to accept from an individual?

Personally, I have nothing but pity for that poster. He’s not just a kid with no social skills, he has no perception of himself. This is a very troubled teen—who as long as we talk about him, he feels that he means something, that he exists.

If I knew him in RL—say, if I were his teacher, I would be talking to someone about getting him into therapy. He has flashes of bright mixed in with his very confused view of the world. BUT, while we can as Bronzers support one another through life’s bumps, we aren’t therapists. (Though there are some Bronzers that are.) This is not the place to solve someone’s serious social or emotional disorders.

Will he keep posting? Sure. Does this bother me? Nope—or only in the sense that I see someone in pain that I can’t do anything to help.

Momlet Did you scroll last night? My rant is located there. I am better today, but I nearly short-circuited my keyboard with salty precipitation last night. Currently, I am blissfully in the State of Denial, so that I may be happy today. In fact, I'm thinking of running for governor of the State of Denial. How's the competition look? Damn, I'm getting all weepy again.

I saw that Caspian poked his nose in. Joss bless him.

As for dear Spooky Magoo, I have dunked Jenny68 in the Font least three times, so it is still in working order. In any case, I don't believe that me messing around with the Font would be a good idea--I think there is a veteren Bronzer who is the only one who possesses the sacred herbs to purify the Font. I wouldn't want to step on her toes.

white wings I'm going to be in hysterics for a while. There is a particular, uneraseable visual image that I associate with nekkid Angel leaping over fences, and I wish Amberlynne were here to share it with me.

A number of years ago, I dated a "Devil's Advocate" type, thinking at first he was charming and sensitive to all sides of a debate. After a few weeks it was a royal pain and I dumped him...hard.

Granted playing that role is good on occasion, it helps to gain perspective, but doing it just for the sake of being the voice of dissention, just makes that person look like a horse's @$$.

Algerina--
Thank you for your speculation on my Spike/Angel Proposal from last night. However, you did not finish it!!! Does Spike win ofr does Angel--and how? Who walks away with his dignity intact and who remains, dispirited, pensive, and despairing? Does the winner really "win"?
PS Wow, you really know how to build an engaging story, even with so little material that I gave you. Kudos! Good, good stuff.

And I STILL haven't got around to reading "Pretty Maids in a Row" yet! Too busy to relax with a good book.

Hollyn: Quality in the cartoons does vary from year to year. Still, it's generally still superior to the stuff of the 70's. Quantity wise, there are more cartoons than ever. On broadcast networks, ABC, CBS, Fox, WB and my local UPN affiliate all have Saturday morning cartoons (NBC has teen sitcoms and PBS has both cartoons and live action kid shows). On top of that, add in all the cable networks and there are probably more cartoons being made than ever before in TV history.

Canadian girls kick @$$: No, my posting name is my real name and last initial. I prefer to not hide behind a pseudonym on my web surfing. It makes the arguments on the conservative posting boards like Free Republic more invigorating. My all-time favorite movie is "Aliens", the second movie in the Sigourney Weaver series. No, I haven't seen the Buffy movie. When the TV show started, I noted the comments by Joss Whedon that the show was what the movie had failed to do, so I've never bothered to rent it. I didn't want to distract from Mr. Whedon's current narrative.

PhilPhud: I found the acting in "Princess Mononoke" quite fine. Japanese actors are always a bit more restrained and introspective. The American voice actors managed to fit that mood.

I do not remember the exact lines, but there's the series of shots that cut back and forth between the Factory Fight and B-Giles and Anya(demon ending name). And Anya(den) is saying ~ ~"Isn't it a wonderful world we've created."

Buffy needs to have tea with Anya.

Buffy: I know Willow was a vamp. Xander was a vamp?

Anya: Yes. Self-confident, kocky. In a Grease is the word kind of way.

Buffy: Cordelia?

Anya: Vamp chow.

Buffy: (hesitant) Giles?

Anya: He was evil, but he was not a vamp.

Buffy: Evil? Like Snidely Whiplash or Quentin Trivers?

Anya: He destroyed personal property.

Buffy: Right.

Pregnant Pause.

Buffy: (cont'd) Me?

Anya: You?

Buffy: A vampire?

Anya: Oh, no. A Slayer. Scruffy looking. Scar. Right there (touches Buffy face).

Buffy: Oh.

Anya: And you spit on your shoes. Gross.

I think it went like this. VampWillow came on to Xander. So between the Bronze and the spell casting Xander asks questions about him and Willow. I don't think that vamp willow knows that Buffy did or how she was different. But I do wish she would have had some reaction to Angel her puppy.

Geo - I disagree to some of the things you say - you say that this is a "chilly" atmosphere, but I see some people fit in right away, a good example of this being Penlind. I ignore posters I don't like, old timers as well as newbies. And as for bezoarish behaviour - we've found that total ignorage is the best way to stop it/drive these people elsewhere. I'm not saying that , if they mend their ways we won't post to them later, but during this time they can be ignored. And frankly, I haven't seen much of an improvement on Sephorith's part. Frankly, he'll have to straighten up and say something worth posting to before I post to him again. And he might not care if I ever post to him. that's his business. Just as who I post to is mine. Don't expect us to change the way we behave to suit you. If you don't like the way we behave, ignore us.

Geo Well I don't want to extend this debate but I know this will do that. I am of the firm belief that the actions of that got him this reputation were not accidental, everytime he overposted, abused somebody or generally misbehaved there were many posters who camly and very politely explained the rules and what was considered good conduct here. He was the one who ignored these warnings, he was offered help and advice and he refused it. As Narrator said several posters who once stood up for him he later turned on. I'm not saying that bronzers are completely innocent in what has happened to Stevie but he is in no way unresponsible for his actions. I can't even say he's been behaving lately, just yesterday he posted saying he would send bezoars here becuase we weren't being friendly enough to him. In my opinion he can't be trusted to behave himself and any bronzer who chooses to ignore or dislike him is justified (again thats my opniion).

wolfguard - Vamp Willow went up to Xander in the Bronze and said, "You're alive", and after he was confused, she said, "No, you're aLIVE". He could have thought back on that. I agree there was some time for talking later, but Vamp Willow would have known only that Buffy existed, nothing about her. And as I said, Buffy has taken a long time to question her beginnings or show any interest in her predecessors. As for the playing other people's tunes, that strikes a chord. (But you knew it would. *g*) And it's also right out of that scene in Restless, isn't it? But it has to percolate.

Algerina - Actually, I was thinking of Buffy, Riley, and Angel. With Anya and Spike it was not losing physical strength so much as the ability to do any naughty thing they desired. I sort of see them in a different class. But they could be considered.

StGermain - I imagine that there will have to be some struggles when the puppy is lose to physically establish the pecking order. I don't think that can happen with a barrier, especially if she is stubborn. *g* Fun things happen with horses that way, too, don't they?

WG - The art really stinks in a lot of animation today, but THE SIMPSONS is often quite funny, and BATMAN BEYOND is fun, if overrated. A lot of viewers have the opposite reaction from you. They are more willing to accept silliness in animation than they are in live action, more willing to suspect disbelief.

Off to beddie bye. 'Night all!

J.S.K.: I understand the whup factor - I'm not on nearly as much as I want to be or during the hours of the day that I wish to be here. Glad that you did have the opportunity to come back.

Gotta get to bed. 'Night Everyone!

Narator: (small format too, a thoughtful suggestion I agree with) I am a little confused to be honest... I didn't once say that you guys had to post to him, I was just saying give him a break... I and some or many others were not here for what you said transpired...

Let's just see what happens and stop debating this issue... ok? =) There are so many other things to concentrate on anyways... I don't tell anyone a thing about who to talk to. And any thoughts I shared were my personal opinions on the situation, sure I did not have all the details, but you and some others can be relentless, and a bruised ego can be the catalyst for total nonsense and annoyance... I do still believe that the incidents in question might have been accidents that got out of hand and I know that Sephiroth has realised that he doesn't need to help it escalate... The best thing to do is let sleeping dogs lie on this matter... Thats' all I was hoping to gain by "butting in"... If he is going to "snap" soon anyway, then why even bother acknowledging it? For the time being he is being civil, in my opinion, and thats better than what you are suggesting this place can be like...

I did notice some rather obscure rantings from Sephiroth when i first came around, and thought he was some jerk that didn't care about anyone but himself, but I see now that he is actually just a smart person trying to make friends in a very chilly atmosphere, (no offense)... But he does have a point that once someone says they are ignoring you, which has happened to me as well if you remember, it is pretty much a given that their "friends" will be doing the same. And that is just immature in itself, because one day that person might have something relevant to say and here you are after you have completely alienated you and them in a public forum over Rules and regulations and personal opinions.

LenS - I thought the acting was dreadful in PRINCESS MONONOKE (which I have yet to finish), and although some of the art was stunning, it lacked the grace of old-time Disney.

Good evening Bronzers. I am posting this information for my wife, Pagan/Penlind, who is away this evening. My daughter, Cairo is typing as her brother Crete tells us what buttons to push, so plese bear with us. Pagan asked that we give you a brief run down on what her Advanced Mythology class decided on a topic that was evolved last night on this board. She felt that certain ones of you would be interested, and probably find the many faults in her students analysis and comparison. She wishes to thank you all, and especially Wolfguard, White Wings, Lil Pia (sp?), St Germain, Beldin, and all of the others who worked on the premise last night. It was a true success with the students.

based on the fact that Odysseus chooses to go on adventure, beginning with the spiteful act againt the Gods, his poor leadership and inability to put his responsibilities in the forefront, and his selfishness, the class feels that Odysseus is not Buffy, but Faith. Buffy is Telemachus (the constant reminder of duty). Buffy, called to heroism, and while resistent, does follow through on duty, has more in bearing with the Thracian myths of the 13th c. BCE, ie-Pericles, Oedipus, and Theseus. Pagan thought several of you who are much more familiar with the show, would enjoy hearing the outcome. Thank you and good evening.

Phil PhuD,

I just have these nightmares of BtVS as a Saturday morning cartoon. It's been decades since I've watched Saturday morning cartoons, perhaps subject matter has changed.

Still, younger people will up and watching. Would that not change the tone and tenor, *g*, of BtVS.

Or is this eyed for a prime time audience?

wolfguard: Go rent "Princess Mononoke" if you want to see non-Disney animation that will make you forget that you're watching a cartoon. The fat one, Roger Ebert, actually put it on his top ten films of the year list when it came out. Normally, I tend to avoid films he likes, but I still rented it about two months ago, expecting to be mildly amused. Was I wrong. It was a great flick with a clever story and well-rounded characters. Their was no obvious bad guys, just real people acting real. Also, the animation was superb.

Another recommendation if you like Roman history. Check out Colleen McCullough's series of novels on the fall of the Roman Republic. She's the lady who wrote "The Thorn Birds". The books so far are "The First Man in Rome", "The Grass Crown", "Fortune's Favorites", "Caesar's Women", and "Caesar: Let The Dice Fly". They're great fiction based on detailed history. Steven Saylor's mystery novels about Gordianus the Finder are also excellent novels about this same period. Each novel or short story is based around actual document events, crimes, or trials.

Thoin: Hmm, sorry the bullet didn't work. There's a cruise missile with a hydrogen bomb warhead heading your way as you read this. No need to worry about near-misses or wingings with one of those. Of course, your neighbors will probably have some complaints for you in the next life. And neighbors is defined as roughly those in a 20 to 40 mile radius of your boudoir. ;-)

White Wings,

In Doppelgangland, in the scene where they do the ritual to return vamp-Willow, Xander walks up to her and says ~~ "So I was a cool arse vamp?" At this point, he's been told.

When did it occur? There's the scene where they do the Scooby battle plan before rushing to the Bronze. Willow stops and returns for the dart gun and encounters vamp-Willow. Darts same. My memory falters, but Willow contacts the others and they regroup and replan and head back to the Bronze.

Vamp-Willow escapes. Big "Fighty Fight." Minion vamps dusted. Vamp-Willow's dusting staid by Willow's cry.

Then we're back to the ritual scene in the factory. Between the Bronze and the Factory, Xander learns of his bizarro-self. Who would tell him? Either Anya or Vamp-Willow.

I think Buffy has to be aware that this was the world inadvertently created by Cordy's wish and ended by bizarro-Gile's destruction of the amulet. If she did not wish to know, then what does it say about Buffy?

I think Slayers are chosen from young women because they have not asked questions. For millennia, a woman was her role and her role was defined by others.

Buffy initially rejected her role, but "came around." She's been at times reluctant and twice turned away (Prophecy Girl and her summer hiatus in '98).

But now she's the Slayer, playing to someone else's tune.

The Slayer has to grow-up.

Anya lost her powers
Buffy lost her powers for an episode and Spike loses one of his powers so to speak with the chip. Are these the three you are thinking of. So your question then is how do they each handle it?
